About

Hi, I’m Carissa Daniels!

Small business owners are my people.

I like the idea of the owner who knows both their employees and their employees’ families.  The owner who sponsors the t-ball team. The small business that posts on their social media about the new small business across the street.  Successful small business owners are driven by their passion to create something meaningful and to bring value to others and the community, and that resonates with me.

Because I am a champion of small businesses, my mission is to provide high-quality support that fits your budget. I take the time to get to know your business, care for it, and root for it as if it were my own.

Like many of my clients, I founded my business because I march to the beat of my own drum.  I value having a say in where I spend my time and energy. I enjoy the freedom of checking my emails in my pajamas and taking lunchtime runs with my dog.

I offer my support so that my clients can have that same freedom to spend more time with their pets or partners or kids or crafting…whatever it is that they’d be doing if they weren’t spending time on bookkeeping.

Outside of the passion I hold for small business advocacy, I earned a B.A. in Mathematics from Boston College and a teaching certificate from Bridgewater State.  Prior to founding Consulting by Numbers, I worked in Account Management, Operations Management, Program Direction, Project Coordination, Sales, and Education.

I look forward to hearing from you!

A glimpse into my world

I have 7 dogs — Bolt, Igloo, Tink, Clipper, Hannah, E-Claire, and Sriracha. Mushing is our primary sport (both on dryland and on snow — I’ve competed throughout New England as well as in New Jersey, Michigan, Wisconsin, and up in Canada!) on foot, scooter, bike, rig & sled.  We also dabble in dog dancing (called freestyle), some of them do lure coursing (like greyhounds) and we just started Clipper in weight pull.  In fact, I moved up to Maine from Boston 3 years ago to give the dogs more space & to pursue mushing more.  We also enjoy hiking (Tink and I are working 48 4,000 footers of NH - 17 done so far)

Foraging

This past summer, I started getting into foraging & even hosted a mushroom foray with our local mycological society at my house.  I also enjoy cutting flowers from my property & creating pretty bouquets for my Zoom background and weaving wreaths from grapevines.  I’m hoping to get a small cut flower business going within the next few years - dahlias & peonies to start and see where it goes from there.

Hi, I’m Erin Tiernan!

I bring the art of storytelling to small businesses and non-profits.

I’ve always been driven by a deep curiosity and a desire to help people make sense of complex systems. For over a decade, I worked as an investigative journalist, where I learned how to ask the right questions — translating nuanced concepts into something people could actually use.

At Consulting By Numbers, I approach every task with this investigative mindset and a flair for creativity. Whether it’s navigating grant writing, strategizing your next media blast, or simply offering an extra set of hands. I’m here to help you untangle the details and challenge you to think in new ways so that you can focus on what matters most: your mission, your growth, and your “why.”

I love working with people, am fluent in Portuguese, and bring a strong sense of integrity and hustle to everything I do. I came to Consulting by Numbers to focus on my passions, find creative freedom, and help others do the same without sacrificing professional goals and needs. That means more time for travel, family, snowboarding, fire spinning, and whatever new quirky hobbies I can think up. I’m all about working smarter and freeing time to return to what you love.

Before joining the Consulting By Numbers team, I was a state and national politics reporter for The Boston Herald. I helped launch the next generation of local non-profit news outside of Boston, and wrote a daily Massachusetts politics newsletter read by thousands of movers, shakers, and policy-makers. I’ve earned several awards for investigative reporting on housing, environmental justice, and inequality and was named the New England Newspaper & Press Association’s 2019 Reporter of the Year. I hold a B.A. in Journalism and Public Relations from the University of Rhode Island.
